Zumba-thon 2010

A fantastic day was had by all at Cosgrove Care’s first Sponsored Zumba-thon which took place in Kelvin Hall International Sports Arena last Sunday.  Participants came from all over the Greater Glasgow area – from Ayrshire to Milton of Campsie – to take part in the 3 hour Zumba class.
The event was a great success thanks to the enthusiasm of the Zumba Instructors who really turned the day into a Zumba Party – so a big thanks must go out to Amy Sinclair, Gary Russell, Scott MacLeod, Leigh Gillespie and Shona Halford.  Gary Russell said “I had a fantastic day and was so pleased that I was asked to take part.  All the instructors were really pleased to be able to help Cosgrove and the good work they do.”
To get the party going, two attendees who were celebrating their birthday got a rendition of “Happy Birthday” to mark the occasion. After the event, one participant said “Well done Cosgrove!  That was a great fun event – I thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Zumba is the fitness programme that everyone is talking about – there are over 600 classes taking place in Glasgow each week!  Why?  Because it’s the best party around!  Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away.  Zumba participants achieve long-term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in one exciting hour of calorie-burning, body-energising, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate for life.
The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin flavour and international zest into the mix and you've got a Zumba class. The Zumba program has become nothing short of a revolution, spreading like wildfire, and positioning itself as the single most influential movement in the industry of fitness.
Cosgrove Chief Executive, Walter Hecht said “We would like to thank everyone who took part along with the volunteers who helped to run the event so smoothly.  We would also like to thank the many businesses who donated prizes and refreshments.  This event really has been supported by the local community.  Sainsbury’s Darnley, who have nominated Cosgrove Care as their charity of the year, sent along a contingent of participants and kindly donated water and bananas to keep the Zumba-goers hydrated and full of energy; Guy’s Restaurant and Bar and Mulberry Street Bar/Bistro, both donated meal a for two, Bohemia Hair Design, Whispers Lingerie, About Health and Beauty and Medespa, all donated vouchers and The Stand Comedy Club donated tickets and a Frankie Boyle DVD.  Boots the Chemist and Eye Candy also kindly made donations which were included in the raffle.
Community Fundraising Officer, Nicola Diamond said “Without the community supporting Cosgrove Care at events like this one, we would not be able to continue to provide the high standard and range of services that we currently make available to adults and children with learning disabilities.  Sponsorship money is still coming in, so we don’t yet know the final amount raised, but it looks like we are on course to meet our target of £5,000.”
Cosgrove Care is a local charity which provides vital services for adults and children with learning disabilities.  They currently support over 120 adults and children ranging in age from 3 to 83.  The benefits of any fundraising can be clearly seen in the way that each of these individuals and their families are supported on a personal level.  It is an award winning Investors in People organisation and is recognised as an employer of choice throughout the care sector. East Renfrewshire Council has recognised the quality and consistency of the services provided.  In June 2008, they achieved Autism Accreditation from the National Autistic Society (NAS), a programme devised to improve the quality of provision for people with an Autistic Spectrum disorder.  Throughout the UK only 150 organisations have achieved Autism Accreditation despite over 500,000 people in the UK having autism.
